unbearably slow

Post by jonblue »

Hey Dozer,

Don't know if it has to do with the server change, but the forum pages now load several times slower, rendering the forum almost unusable/unreadable. I am in the States on a high-speed cable modem line and have checked the connection and tested with several other sites, so I don't think the problem is on my end. Are others having this same problem? It seemed to have coincided with the server change. I just wanted to bring it to your attention. I hope it can be remedied because the site is invaluable.

I am not surprised it’s slow, routes into TH are awful at times. Might be OK on local ISP's but for global use would be better hosted somewhere else.

Yes, I should say the server is now located in Thailand, which explains why it is quick here and slow outside. Please get some load times of how long it takes to load screens etc. and we'll see what can be done. Thanks for pointing this out.

Sun Mar 12.

Still unbearably slow.

Cannot believe you want a good site like yours, hosted in Thailand.

Why not try http://www.3ix.org or anywhere in the USA.

you can always use http://www.dnsstuff.com to ping or traceroute the server from a high speed connection in the U.S. - the one of dnsstuff.com, or from any other server listed here: http://traceroute.org

Pings from dnsstuff.com are at the moment around 283 ms, which is an excellent connection.

Another ping (actually a traceroute) from Europe shows times around 400 ms, which is very good to:
http://www.helios.de/cgi-bin/nph-trace.cgi
traceroute to coolthaihouse.com
(hop) 22 ... (202.142.215.102) 451 ms 451 ms 452 ms
or another one here:
http://www.eckes.org/modules.php?name=C ... page&pid=2
traceroute to coolthaihouse.com
(hop) 23 ... (202.142.215.102) 384.797 ms 384.391 ms 385.095 ms

Examining / tracing the connection more closely shows:

1) International connections come into that server directly. It must have a direct international connection to the CAT International backbone. International connections do not go to the inner-Thailand internet first before reaching the local network of the server.

2) (Thus) the server must be directly in a datacenter at the CAT in BKK. (CAT = Communication Authority of Thailand) This should be the best possible location within Thailand for national and for International access.

3) The measured short ping times (try for yourself at http://www.dnsstuff.com for a US connection or from wherever you are) show that the access could be very fast. Well, if the network would be running fine all the time, which is not the case in Thailand, and especially not for whatever the CAT touches, and they have the monopoly for International connections.

4) While tracing I noticed however that the local network, where the server is installed, seems to drop packages (traceroute from dnsstuff.com shows that sometimes.) I'll do some more tracing to see if that can be narrowed down. it might be a local problem at a router there, which - once identified - can get fixed.

Could you post here a ping or a traceroute made exactly at that time when you experience the coolthaihouse.com server as slow? That might show where a problem could be hiding.

You can do the traceroute / ping from your local PC or from one of these sites:
http://www.eckes.org/modules.php?name=C ... page&pid=2
http://www.helios.de/cgi-bin/nph-trace.cgi
http://www.dnsstuff.com
or from any other server listed here: http://traceroute.org

And then the US residents have fast access, and the Thai residents can wait again ... I'm sick of that, there is no real broadband here in LOS, it is expensive, and then the good sites are far away, so that on top of the slow connections here we do get the delay of the International bottleneck at the Thai monopoly club CAT  :x

From within thailand or from where / Europe / USA?

Do you know how to do a traceroute (see my post above) - that would show where the problem could be.

I tested a few hours before you, and access was fine, from US, from Europe, and from Thailand. I'm testing now, and it is even faster - ping from US around 200ms only! I do not see any hints of dropped packages now, which I did see last night...

Thus, please, exactly at the time you see it as slow, can you do such a traceroute and post it / the last 4-5 lines from it?

To make it easy :
Click this for a traceroute from Germany: http://www.helios.de/cgi-bin/nph-trace. ... ihouse.com
or
http://sites.inka.de/sites/lina/cgi-bin ... ceroute+-n

Click this for a traceroute from the US:
http://www.sdsc.edu/~hutton/cgi-bin/tra ... ihouse.com
or
http://www.slac.stanford.edu/cgi-wrap/t ... ihouse.com

Here are some results as of a few minutes ago (the response time in ms is at the end of the line):
From http://www.sdsc.edu (San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) ):
14 202.142.215.102.rev-ip.isp-thailand.com (202.142.215.102) 383.631 ms 368.966 ms 364.510 ms

From http://www.slac.stanford.edu (Stanford University)
18 202.142.215.102.rev-ip.isp-thailand.com (202.142.215.102) 219 ms (ttl=45!)

From sites.inka.de Germany:
23 202.142.215.102 384.908 ms 385.237 ms 384.38 ms

Users in Thailand can usually only dream of such response times ...

Please show how "fast/slow" and help to nail down the reason for it - do a traceroute as described above, or as shown here, and give the results:

btw, the 900 ms you see there for me are the fastest I get for any site from where I am. If you have a better connection - you are soooo lucky!!!

Thanks!
