Air Con for 5 classrooms

Air conditioning, fans, and anything related to keeping it cool, such as insulation. This would include any posts generally discussing how to keep it cool, such as which types of blocks are better insulators.... ideal wall thickness for keeping an A/C house cool, etc.

Air Con for 5 classrooms

Postby JimmyMango » Mon Apr 22, 2013 11:48 am

Hi guys, I just got back from a village outside of Thakhek, near Nakom Phanom. It was a 5 room school for grades up to 4.

80 students.

We brought schools supplies and sporting goods for the kids which they were happy to receive. But now that we were there and walked the grounds- what they really need is air conditioning... Their classrooms are like 45 degrees C.

The classrooms are about 300 square feet a room. What kind of unit would we need per class room and how much per unit do you think?

Thanks for any replies! Much obliged - any other wisdom you wish to pass on regarding this is greatly appreciated-

its a small area but im guessing packed with kids and windows.
therefore about an 18,000 Btu unit should suffice so approx 35,000k-40,000k Baht per unit.including installation.

There could be a problem that no one will approve funding for an expensive monthly electrical bill as they may opt to use all that money for other more urgent needs and the AC will go into disuse or create political problems. Obviously, AC isn't a priority to them and the kids are out of school in the hottest 3 months of the year anyway. On a related note, I know someone who gave a family a refrigerator as he thought they really needed one. After he left they found they couldn't afford the electrical bill and now it is used as an extra cabinet.

I totally agree. There will be no funding available.

You'd / they'd be better off if you figured out why the temperature is so high indoors. Most likely no roof insulation and not enough internal ventilation. Deal with those and you have a better solution for them in the long term.

Great reponses guys, that all makes a lot of sense. How about ceiling fans instead ( as well as looking into the insulation issue mentioned). The second grade room they had to rip out the flat ceiling because of termites so it only has rafters and the tin roofing.

Anyone have a quote on ceiling fans for those size rooms? Approx. 300 ft

Again much obliged for the informative reponses!

-regards.

Ceiling fans go for as little as 6-700b each

insulation for 195b up a roll. redo the ceiling with Viva board(concrete fibre board) vent the ceiling with whirly gig on the roofs.

sorted and minimal electric bills
