Not wishing to make light of a serious subject ... but ... :)

Virus that 'makes humans more stupid' discovered

A virus that infects human brains and makes us more stupid has been discovered, according to scientists in the US.

It would appear the Ministry of Education has found the souurce of the virus, but again have failed to act. http://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opin ... r-thailand.
At the annual testing of teachers on their core subjects, nearly 86% failed. Did this raise alarm with the Ministry of Education? No, they claimed that it only affected some schools, which they refused to name. The test of core subjects ranged from 50% failure in Thai language right up to the high 80s in maths, science, history and other basic subjects, but as the failure rate was higher "up country" than Bangkok, the minister no less, said there was no need to worry as long as the students and teachers learnt the "Core Values". And he also stated that tea money is acceptable if parents want to get their children into one of the "better" schools. I bet the teachers tested in the "better" schools also scored just the same as the others.

Welcome to happy land, where nothing other than being "sanook" really matters - other than face and graft but that's ok because they are part of ensuring a status of "sanook".

Since the military takeover over 12 months ago, not much has been done even though there were wild promises at the start, but I do concede many things have changed. Yesterday, the PAD core leaders who caused the two international airports to close down, had running gun battles with ghosts and themselves travelling between the two airports and managed to kill some police and people into the bargain, were finally found guilty by the Appeals Court. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/politic ... bankruptcy and now, hopefully they will not be able to raise the money to lodge a final appeal.
The figure 600 million baht must have been dreamt up by the Airports Authority of Thailand and much more damage was done than that with International flights being diverted to the Air Force base at U-Tapao, air cargo frozen in time and international flights having meals delivered by private contractors for out going flights from U-Tapao and all the inconvenience caused to tourists and travellers alike. It also harmed Thailands reputation as a tourist destination.
Other court cases are pending against the core leaders of the PAD, and Sondhi and Chamlong have already been found guilty in other cases but are out on bail pending appeal. And their chances of winning on appeal were looking good until the junta started removing judges, moving judges and destroying the public service hierarchy.
In the last three months more Director Generals and Permanent Secretaries of Departments have been either sacked or moved to inactive posts, which is in conflict with what the junta stated not six months ago, that director generals and permanent secretaries would be running the the country and the junta would just be the guiding hand.
All of this raises the question of how Yingluck could be charged by the anti corruption commission (not their job) because the Attorney's General Department refused to do so, found guilty by the NLA when she was no longer in office, of removing just one public servant, a director general of a department under her direct control because that public servant openly declared he was not loyal or liable to the elected government.
Now all of this leads to one thing, who appointed them in the first place, and if it was the Senate or Public Service Commission shouldn't they be sacked too. We know the Public Service Commission is a paper tiger so why not get rid of it as well. Half the ex Senators are on the NLA so they could be axed as well. Wouldn't it be nice to see the pages of the Bangkok Post and Nation filled with Jobs Vacant, only those with real qualifications need apply, seniority will not be a factor and start listing all the positions that need Permanent Secretaries and Director Generals, but that's a maybe not.
Perhaps it's time that the whole of the public service, including police, judges, director generals and permanent secretaries were all sacked and told to reapply for their position all over again. Previous positions would not be taken into account, just qualifications and a brief summary of how they intended to take the country forward. As the NLA can no longer be trusted, perhaps they could appoint a "neutral farang board" to sit and meditate over appointments as it would also give the applicants a chance to show their English skills they learnt in school.

Now if they would just do something about the Red Bull heir who "allegedly" killed a motorcycle cop with his Ferrari, all would be right with the world since the coup leaders promised the country that the "rule of law" would prevail. Unfortunately, there is one law for the rich and connected and one for the rest of the country

Him and a few others who have fled across borders after committing murders, graft and blackmail openly and everyone being too scared to stop them.
Then they could go on to reforming the police force, but the biggest task would be wrestling the percieved power out of the hands of the "elite" families who manage to cover-up everything.
The hardest part would be kicking the old general out of the Army Commander's residence on Soi "saint theves" in Bangkok and then banning serving armed forces generals from acting as his aides. Then they should tackle the problem of the 2800 odd generals for a piss poor piddling army http://www.globalfirepower.com/country- ... d=thailand which is made up mostly of national servicemen and undertrained ill equipt "rangers". In other words, cannon fodder for the southern border provinces. And once those have gone, the next step would be to train Thai soldiers not to kill unarmed Thai civilians. And the people and soldiers who ordered such massacres should be charged and bought to justice.
But would the justice system prevail or would it need overhauling as well?
Perhaps a good start would be to reform the education system and make every teacher who teaches a core subject be able to score at least 90% on the subject she or he teaches. They could start by letting all students into a school that live in the area. instead of making it paying concern for the schools "directors" who the parents don't elect, but are appointed by the education department, not for their knowledge but for their monetary benefit.
I once asked the most respected teacher in a certain high school in Nontharburi why she was no longer teaching as she had a Master's Degree in Education from abroad and suddenly she was made school co-ordinator. She said the other teachers didn't like what she was teaching.....the kids how to think for themselves, so the powers that be in the school, just contacted the education department and made her null and void, but first they got rid of the headmaster to a lesser school because he endorsed what she was doing. And the Head of the English Department couldn't read, write or speak English properly, but she was "The Power" because she was in her 50s and knew people.
My daughter is in her final year at college and only just learning about real history..... dictators like Hitler, Mao and the rest and that's only because they have a farang English teacher. They just came back from Katchanarburi where they were actually told Thailand was on the side of the Japanese during WW2. Oh shock, horror, amazement and then they found out why and how Thailand escaped war reparations which I can't print here. Luckily my daughter already knew and the rest of the students are from India, the Philippines and other Asean nations where it's not a crime to teach real Thai history or even talk about it. Luckily there's only six of them.
Just where do you start with reform? Perhaps by destroying all the tin pot fiefdoms. Role on Asean.

Under normal circumstances I would never post an opinion, especially from this rather second rate newspaper, however, the author seems to have hit the nail on the head rather well with this summary. He's also the person I would appoint as the Minister for Finance in Thailand. http://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opin ... e-to-roost

Nailed it very well.

Basically, the problems we now face are structural and no cosmetic rearrangement of any kind will suffice. As a society we have two choices: bury our heads deeper in the sand and pretend our society is not in the late stages of decay, or stop deluding ourselves and face up to the truth and meet these tough challenges head on. So what will it be?

Not just Thailand. Sadly, it applies equally to the land of my birth. This is just the latest in a long line.

Another take on it.
