The of course our Keif could pluck a note or two:

Or if you are currently building maybe a more laid-back approach:

Difficult to come up with the best Guitar solo ever, so many stiles, so much good music. but here is one that I think most every one will agree on.
Layla
Though this Video is not the best example of the worlds most famous opening guitar riff, I posted this particular version because it features two of IMO worlds best guitar players.
Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton
I talk to my self because I am the only one who will listen

And for the guitar purist perhaps this one.
every note so clean, so crisp. If I could play like that once in my life, as soon as i was done with this song I would die happy.
Do your self a favor, listen to this video to the end. He is incredible!!!

I was expecting this one and am 100% in agreement.

Gotta agree Roger, but I prefer Dick Dale "The King of Surf Guitar"

RR and elgato:

RR couldn't be bothered to back up his contenders with examples of why they should be ranked highly.

This doesn't do it for me:

As for Dick Dale ... accomplished but more strumming than plucking so not high on my list.

This guy was highly rated by aficionados but not sure I can see why:

I had a few beers on several occasions with David Gilmour way back then ... talking classic cars ... he could certainly work the frets.

MGV12,

It wasn't that I couldn't be bothered, it was, as you said, just my opinion. I will post what I regard as their best four on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-Hc5abSVHA Apache http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQSPivbWwuY Hawaii Five-O and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb4YG9Qw ... re=related Ghost Riders in the Sky and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_qYPaPIHc0 Secret Agent Man.
I also think their renditions of other songs were not so good, Sukiyaki being one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cam7m2VBh4 as compared to the original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvuO0BsE ... re=related but again, it's a personal thing and The Ventures wrote/rewrote for their audience, many times on the spot from an audience request.
And they did more for guitarists and drummers than any other group: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... RA73E4JXAY
Especially this little girl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFmOGxNXkSk who later played with them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WrWqO9wTd0 and Nockie Edwards. Sorry about the quality of the video.

I have to thank the OP for starting this thread :) as whilst searching for examples I wished to post I have found some amazing guitarists that I never knew about. 8)

It's all subjective of course ... three of my own personal favourite pluckers from back when:

Sounds even better when you're there!

Low-key acoustic version of what has become known as a tribute to founder member of Pink Floyd ... Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett.

Not up there with the great tracks but ... just indulgent:
