Postby martin b » Fri Jan 29, 2010 2:39 am

Hi to all, Martin and Tam here and after twenty something years we have decided where to build our house ,
we have 1 Rai of land set aside for us in Ubon Ratchathani and i can't wait, a three bedroom bungalow will do,
just need to sit down and design it.
cheers Martin and Tam

Hi Geordie, yes your right mate, been looking at cth for a while now and found it very informative, just waiting for the right moment to make the break but as you well know NOW IS NOT THE TIME.

The wife and I enjoyed designing our bungalow. Basically looked at loads of books and picked and made changes to what we liked. If you look at Thai house designs they hardly ever have a "utility room", something to think about to put all those "out of sight" things that need easy access.
I drew up my plans on graph paper and went to a builder to ask for a rough quote. Much to my embarrassment he came back with about 10 pages of properly drawn up plans.

Because proper written contracts re still relatively rare here, he probably naturally assumed that you were giving him the job

Hi there, Martin again, my wife found a book called Baan Chandeow 120 about bungalows with lots of different ideas i quite like number 51 on page 102 /103. Not sure if anyone is familiar with this book, but i wonder would a builder be able to build from such a book or drawer plans from this as an idea ? My only problem is it's all written in Thai

Cheers Geordie, thanks for that, i used to have AUTOCAD on my pc but for some reason i've lost everything to do with it, or just can't open it with my lack of computer knowledge. I think it's about time i purchased a new pc that does'nt have a starting handle on the side, with sawdust coming out the back end.
By the way is there a minimum depth that footings can be dug at as our land is rice paddy filled with 500mm of soil to bring it out of the water level then i intend to add a further 500mm on top of that where we're are to build the bungalow .

dificult to answer it depends on how hard the ground is normally how deep you put the footing is decided after you have dug a hole and inspected to see if the ground is ok obviously if its a bog you have to start considering things like piles rather than footing i would hold off any more filling till you get the footings in as you can always add a crawlspace under the house but if the ground has not had enough time to settle and compact you will have to dig through it to put in the footings i think usually 1-1-1/2 mtrs takes you to solid gadgetman has come up with an inovative way then using 9" pipe to bring it up to floor beam height have a read what he did

Building a new home with sauna phonajalong korat is gadgetmans place thread
