Water-House Extended time line

Postby Sometimewoodworker » Sat Apr 06, 2013 4:52 pm

In the beginning (early 2007) there was a field and we bought 2 Rai to build our house.

P2220151.jpg
The field

We commissioned a garden wall and got in a Maco to dig a pool to raise the area that we will build our house.

SWIMBO then decided she wanted a water-house later and so we added an order to our garden wall builders. That was to put posts in the pool while it was dry to support the water-house to be. We also had to get the pool diggers to leave part of the pool base at about 1 meter deep for the posts.

Our workers found that it was very hard going with the foundation holes.

Even with water left in the holes over night didn't make the job much easier.

Eventually the foundation holes were finished and had a concrete layer in them ready for the rebar base and pillar.

A little time went by, a day or two and progress was good

Some time has passed and we begin to see the pool taking shape

We notice that there is a lot of erosion so add Fescue grass to reenforce the banks

The suspense after those immortal words:

I at least thought the next few lines would have been "and on the third day the paradise for SWMBO was nearing completion, the fourth day it was, so I ordered it to rain for the next 2 days and nights until it was complete and so I rested"........Sounds like a book written with imagination.
Looks like a Koi pond or a pig wallow; both the same.

Well if you are impatient to see more of the story of the "swimming pool"   "Koi pond or a pig wallow" around our water-house rather than the episodic version I will post, you can follow the link in my sig.

At least we didn't rush and build where there would sometimes be a lake as one member of CTH I've met did      We do know the maximum water level.  and that will always be lower than the floor

Time passed at it is wont to do and water levels rose and fell as they usually do

P1060412 Aug 2010.jpg
Aug 2010

Pigs had stopped wallowing (RR :P :P )

SWMBO's plants grew as the usually do

P1070552 Mar 2011.jpg
March 2011

BUT all was not good In SWMBO's eyes so she decided that 3 meters at the shallow end wasn't OK

The pool was pumped out and the first Maco came tried and was found wanting or the base was too soft

P1070817 1 April 2011.jpg

The first attempt over 10 days later a second Maco went down to 6 meters

P4103133 10 April 2011.jpg
10th April 2011

All was good again and pigs started having fun again (RR :? :? )

P1000168 Aug 2011.jpg
2nd August 2011

The wood supports for SWMBO's plants rotted as the had done before So I decided we would enrich the soil with iron  and stop replacing supports every year or two.

Then the rain came as some will remember and we watched as the Bangkok ~ Ayutthaya lake began to fill.

we had a little ourselves
P1000289 6th September 2011.jpg
It rained a bit more 6th September 2011

P1000313 6th September 2011.jpg
More rain 6th September 2011

then we got a lot more

P1000352 8th September 2011.jpg
Maximum water level 8th September 2011

The 2012 dry season wasn't so dry

P1020285 7th March 2012.jpg
Dry season again 7th March 2012

This year the dry season was (is ) very dry

P1060417 4th March 2013.jpg
This year dry season 4th March 2013

And SWIMBO decided we (I   ) needed to spend some of our (MY  ) money

So she talked to the one Thai builder she liked and who was still willing to work for us. She explained our ideas for a Water-House and asked if he was interested.

2013_03_20_10_57_37.jpg
This is the plan we started with.

He was interested in doing the job especially because he would be the main worker though his wife would assist when needed.

We asked if he wanted a Job price of daily rate. He decided being paid on a day by day basis was better.

He suggested building a 1/10 scale model which we were happy to pay for

P1060433 9th March 2013 builders model 1.jpg
Builders model 9th March 2013

FWIW I wouldn't usually think of paying on a day by day basis as it can easily be a recipe for slow work. We however have built up a degree of trust and so far it is going OK only time will tell. I'm paying on a 5 days pay for 7 days work basis with the balance due on completion to our satisfaction, so it is trust but verify.

There was an interval of about 8 days during which we went shopping for metal and other supplies for the work. Na-Sit (our builder) came with us to advise. He very diffidently asked Nui (SWMBO) if we would buy an SDS drill for him as he had always wanted one but had never been able to afford it. He would pay us back from the money he was due from the work. I was happy to agree end he chose a Makita for about ฿7,000. I also got a 7" angle grinder to help with cutting the posts down to size and we decided to get an OxyPropane cutting torch to speed things along.

He built a stand and trolley for the cutting torch.

and also a reel to keep our temporary power supply cable on.

Then on the 19th work on the base of the water-house started.

If you mean in the "Dry season again 7th March 2012" pic its an Adult School payed for by the national government with a teacher included in the funding.

If it's in another pic let me know

At the moment we live in Nui's house in the next village :o :o.

The water house is continuing to be built now   while we are in Japan.

We would never risk doing that with our main house as I'm sure you understand.

It will be built on the raised area in the second of the "Foundation holes" pic and the "The rain begins to fill the new pool (Aug 2007)" pic.

We decided to reverse the usual order of building and do the garden first. :D

P1060451 kitchen garden.jpg
The local Grannies love the short walk.

This area will be Nui's kitchen garden. at the moment we let 4 of the nearest old folk use the area and both of us benefit

In the outer Garden it's mostly fruit but there are a few fish as well.

That's where our sunshade is.
