You better hope in Oz the system stays as it is
Unfortunately like most Government programmes they never seem to be able to impliment them without them being abused so that the cost becomes unattainable. Why this is so is beyond me as they are supposed to have the so called "Brains" of the country at their disposal to work out a "Perfect system". But then, we get back to that old saying,"None so generous as those spending someone else's money."!

This is a word of warning, make sure, you personally understand everything. Not your wife, daughter, friend, just you.
After surgery..... I still don't know what was actually done except there were major problems with bone growths, major tears and muscles not being good enough to reposition for tendons.....I had an appointment to see a rehabilitation specialist this morning (Monday) at 0740 hrs. I arrived 15 minutes early at the Ortho wing and was sent to the rehab section. I handed over my appointment sheet with 3 blank pages for doctor's notes, to be told to have a seat. It was deserted. Even the girl who took my appointment sheet disappeared. At 0745 hrs I went looking for someone, anyone, because nobody would talk to me or tell what was going on. By 0800 hrs I had located a nurse from another section, who in turn located the nurse from my section, who in turn located "the girl" who was handling the appointments. Meanwhile a Thai woman arrived, then a farang and both sat down and opened business, she with the newspaper and cell phone, him with a laptop, cell phone and iPad.
At 0815 I was really pissed off and everyone just hid. When I finally found the appointment's girl and asked where the specialist was she told me "just a minute, have a seat". At 0830 hrs I again asked her where the specialist was. It was as if it was a whole new question for her, she looked at the appointment sheet and then suddenly said "this specialist is not here, he comes Tuesday and Thursday. No problem, please wait, have a seat". I informed the girl there was a problem and she should reschedule the appointment, which I didn't make: They had!
My daughter knew I was pissed and tried to come to the rescue, which I ended by telling the girl "Talk to me, not my daughter", which is like saying ignore me I'll go away and then you can fix the problem by talking Thai. The girl pointed to the sheet and claimed the part that said: "Treatment may run from 0730 to 1130" covered the fact there was no specialist, she could change the specialist and I should have a seat. I told the girl to reschedule.
I turned and walked away, it was 0840 hrs. I had been there at 0715 as per their instructions. There was no specialist, there was no treatment.
And all they are doing now is ringing my daughter or wife's cell phone number. They refuse to ring my house phone or cell phone because they know I will answer. I have been through this before when I walked out of the MRI section and they rang my specialist at 0330hrs in Dubai to ask him to get me to come back and they would fix the "problem".
Scrooge was right: Bah Humbug!
As it's a public holiday today I'll have to wait until tomorrow before anyone with any brains rings me.

Every time I hear that I fume and almost never sit. I stay standing there staring at them until something happens. It doesn't make me loved but it usually speeds things up.

If the girl, who knew the specialist was not there had said "He's not here today sir, we made a mistake, I'll get you into see another specialist if that's okay with you"? I would have agreed. I'd just travelled for an hour and a half to get top rehabilitation treatment, not to be made to wait for over an hour for nothing, then turn around and come home. My daughter's in the middle of exams, she can't afford a wasted 5 hours. People don't seem to understand the older you get the less time you have to waste...... because they can't do their job.
You're right Fred, I am not loved there but all I ask is value for money, not to be screwed around by Thai women.

i found out I had Hepatitis C last year and had to do six months of nasty treatment. ( i will find out if I'm still clear next month if I am It should be forever) My specialist was great! he speaks perfect English, is very knowledgeable! He could actually answer my obscure questions. a first in Thailand for me as i generally find Thai doctors are used to people waiing them instead of asking the questions that need to be answered!

Are you saying it's okay to make people wait when they have an appointment after spending 1/2 million baht? Or are you saying the Thai girls the hospital employs have a right to be rude and ignore you? Or are you saying it's okay for you to communicate so the doctor knows what's wrong and then not tell you?
I'm sorry I like to be told what is going on after travelling for over an hour, waiting for over an hour and then finding the doctor wasn't working that day...... and I still don't know what is wrong and if they can fix it or not.

Roger Ramjet don't know where this hospital was but I had a very similar experience with Bangkok Hospital Pattaya

I had broken my knee pruning some trees in the US (18 year old brain in a 60 year old body) and had to start Physical Therapy when I returned to LOS and went through the Orthopedic Department of said hospital for the referral

Never saw a "specialist" just some kid that wanted me to go through a series of elephant tricks in the guise of rehabilitation. Not once did they even touch me. I even had to bring my own heat pads prior to the "exercises" and my own ice pack for after cool down. The doctor in charge of the department even walked by me on several occasions and never said a word about why I was bringing my own supplies :x

Finally got tired of the lack of care and went to Pattaya International where a real specialist looked my injury over, had me do some stretches, and made a complete evaluation of my situation and designed a specific program of rehabilitation, which included daily heat therapy, massage, stretches , and ice cool down. The young girl was excellent and I credit her with being able to walk limp free today

Unfortunately here in Thailand we have to demand treatment and not play into this mai pen rai culture that prohibits any questioning of "authority" and blind faith in doctors

RR it is not alright at all !!! I would ask for compensation from the hospital! My doctor told me in advance when he would be going to an international conference etc.
What hospital? I use Thonburi hospital: most of the specialists are from siriraj

I'll answer all the questions about failure to communicate with one word: Bumrungrad.
First let me say the specialists I have seen have been excellent. My ortho is the same one who fixed a problem 13 years ago. His assistant came and talked to me for about 1/2 an hour, explaining everything that would happen before the operation, which was the second time, as I had sat with the specialist and he showed me films of exactly what was wrong (going by the MRI's) and how he would fix it. Both were totally professional, as was the anesthetist. The problem it seems was the MRI was wrong, or didn't cover everything. It missed a spur that was pushing the ball joint out of the socket, which after they removed they had to reshape the socket and more and more and more.
My problems have been the nursing staff and the female appointments people who refuse to tell me what is going on. They know, I don't and I don't like that at all. It's as if they are telling me they control my life with the information they refuse to depart with. I told my wife and daughter to come and pick me up at 0930hrs on Sunday as I should have seen the specialist by then. They in turn received a message from Bumrungrad saying to pick me up at 0800hrs. It's as if I don't exist. After the operation I told the nursing staff I needed fluid (they wanted a "sample"), but the fridge was empty after I drank the last Coke. They ignored me, or said nothing about fixing the problem for 2 hours, except to demand "the sample". So when I told them I would go search for some coke or fluid they did their "you can't do that" routine. My response was "well you're doing nothing about your/my problem so I have to. The nurse called a security guard. And then things went down hill. Badly down hill I might add.
And later after I took my new mate, the security guard, out for a cigarette and a trip to Seven Eleven I was hated by the nursing staff who would have filled me full of every available drug they could get their hands on, if I had let them. They wanted someone meek, mild and saying yes the whole time and they ended up with me questioning everything and on the move. It was a long night, so I had 3 cigarettes to invade their sensibilities some more and I told them each time what I was doing, to keep the pot on the boil. They wouldn't talk to me, so I was on the move around the hospital and if they wanted me they had to find me. I enjoyed it, they didn't.
And as the sub-dawn broke, me in a great deal of pain, could not be found.... I was having a cup of tea at Au Bon Pain, but I was not well and I refused to surrender, but I was communicating with the security guard and the staff at Au bon Pain. I'd point to his walkie talkie after a burst of Thai and then point at me and he'd nod. Then I'd laugh. It was a cheap victory in my books, which is why they sent the text to my wife and daughter at 0500hrs and then would only communicate with them in Thai, either over the phone or in person. I was shut-out totally.....Damnit I'm the bloody patient, not them.
I became like Sgt. Schultze from Hogan's Heros and I knew nothing and that was the way they would keep it.
I think the botched appointment on Monday was intentional, but I won't find out until Friday.
The good news is I'm at home with my two dogs and communication is constant.
If I was impolite I would say F#%^ the Thai way, but as I'm not I will just say bring on the cannons.

RR you must have forgot to smile, seems here that is the key and fixes a great many things. Not just nurses most of the building crews will come back to bite you over losing face one way or another.

Good to hear you made it out alive a lot of dying goes on in places like that.

Totally agree. Let's just do half a job then blame the farang. And if he has audacity to complain then we can lose face and try and kill him. It doesn't matter that his bill is 1/2 million and climbing, we'll just screw him around because we're Thai. Is that okay Bill?

The only reason I made it out alive is because I kept moving.... and now I'm paying the price 5 fold, but I'm alive.

My mrs wanted her nose done and she saw a specialist from Bumramgrad. His answer to all questions concerning the Finished look were "I don't know" so I said "we don't Want you" ; he was very angry that we dare have our own mind and would not just throw our money at him. Even my better half agreed with me which is not normal 8)
When she eventually got her nose done after my picking her doctor and he passing my interview it was a brilliant job. The problems started afterwards with everyone accusing me of beating her up because she had black eyes

Gees, you have to have a sense of humour here. I was finally wrung up by the hospital. It must have taken them all day to find a scape goat with enough seniority to ring me. The first thing she said was, "you don't have all your medication, how are you feeling?" So I told her I had it all and then found out the rehabilitation specialist I haven't seen was supposed to assess me because the operation had gone for 4 hours and there were "complications" that he was supposed to address, but....well but, he wasn't on that day. So could I drive in (it was 1730hrs) and somone would see me straight away.
And so I went through the whole damned thing again.... my daughter has the car and we live at least an hour and a half outside Bangkok. Bloody shock horror "we didn't know that". Of course they did look at my address on every sheet of notes. Look at the computer. Sigh.
No wonder I feel like crap, no wonder I'm contemplating not going back to be screwed around some more. And when she asked if I could get a taxi I asked if she would pay the 1,000 baht? So, she came up with "we can send our ambulance" which really had me in stitches.
I was rude, I was abnoxious and it was like water off a duck's back. All I got was sorry, sorry, mistake, mistake.
In the end I said I would go in on Friday when I have the appointment with the surgeon, other than that I wash my hands of them. I am not in the most pleasant of moods

Just a bit of an update: Bumrungrad Hospital (Medical Director) has said they are paying for all further treatment after reviewing my medical files. They have appointed a co-ordinating Medical Officer to make sure all appointments are made correctly, I am spoken to in English face to face, the medical appointments are made for my convenience on the same day as my other appointments and the MRI Department is under medical review.
I should not have had the operation on my shoulder when I did.
There's a lot more to come out of this but I was asked not to print it yet as a full scale investigation is under way.
