I swam in one of them once. I had heard that it was expensive to install and run and a longer pool would have been cheaper if the space were available.
I found it a bit irrittating and a little like swimming in the waves in the sea, but then I am more your recreational type of swimmer and not prone to do any racing.

Cost? The powerful pumps start from around Baht 42,800 (5.5HP 380V 3-Ph. Flow 55 m3/hr) to Baht 218,800 (25HP 380V 3-Ph. Flow 280-400 m3/hr) . Add the special plumbing and nozzles and 7% VAT. Almost impossible to retro fit and should be planned with the design of a new pool. Effect? Dunno, never actually swam in one.

I`m curious about these swim machines too; particularly if there are good quality ones which are cheaper than the brands like EndlessPool which look like wave-pool type funfun but are way over my budget... at this point I`m looking at a simple swim tether http://www.swimtether.com They look silly, but effective for swimming "laps" without turns every 5 strokes.

Swimtether is not a counter flow current generator, it's a lead like for a dof. It's really for teaching children to swim or for coaching sport swimmers.

there are no cheap alternatives to a counter-current jet pump.
