How to use fitting

Would be grateful if any members could explain how this fitting is used it came with the shower mixer valve and i understand it is to allow for any misalignment of the water pipes. It has a serrated screw end which looks like it should screw straight into the plastic pipe !!!

Should have said the serrated end appears to be 1/2inch BSP albeit a slack fit

the fitting is used to connect the mixer to to the thread in the wall. it is offset to allow you compensate inaccurate installation measurements. the 20mm smooth side goes on the swiveling unions of mixer. Selfexplaining really if you try it
