Separated and cracking walkway

image dsc20725.jpgThis shot shows the walkway in the back of a house that I noticed recently. The sequence of events here is this: The back walkway was originally poured and then later the owner decided to increase the area of the walkway – effectively pouring an adjacent area which wasn’t originally poured.

image dsc20724.jpgThe separation is caused because the rebar mesh support doesn’t interconnect the two pours. If you wanted to add an additional pour, you would need to make sure that rebar was drilled into the old pour so that the two are ‘attached’. Otherwise ground settling will lead to this ugly situation.
